N-aya asked me to take a picture of her family. Her husband put on his black silk turban and she called for the children to come. Everybody was ready when she quickly went back into the house. She wanted her transistor radio to be on the photo as well.

The Chiang Mai Akha Radio Station in Northern Thailand transmits every morning for two hours. Akha villagers in Laos and Burma are also able to receive the programme. When I visited Akha villages in Laos I was surprised to see that the songs of the (Thai) Akha band Ado were wellknown there: the radio had spread them across borders and mountains.
