Scale drawings

Scale drawings (2012)

ink on paper, 14 x 8.5 cm, set of three

Around the end of 2011, the human population was reported to have exceeded 7 billion. I want to try to make this abstract concrete.  The south face of Regent Studios has a surface area of c. 1.75 billion mm2, which – divided equally among all humans – gives each person an area of 0.25 mm2, or a square of side 0.5 mm.

Anthropologist Robin Dunbar proposed a theoretical limit to the number of people with whom we can maintain meaningful relationships. The three drawings represent an individual, some upper and lower limits to Dunbar’s number, and the south face of the building scaled to the same area as the larger limit to Dunbar’s number.
